The Arma dei Carabinieri Apologizes to the Two American Girls

The head of the press office of the Arma dei Carabinieri (the military police), Colonel Roberto Riccardi, issued a statement to the two American girls that were involved in the student rape case with the two carabiniere policemen.

“The carabiniere department asks for forgiveness from the two girls and hopes that as a force, can help them and their families as much as possible,” he said.

Riccardi explained that the two officers have not been arrested because the officers are still under investigation, meaning that the case is in the hands of the courts not the carabiniere. While the two officers are suspended, the carabiniere is also concerned about the possibility of a reoccurrence of an incident like this.

Riccardi also responded to the allegations of sexism within the department by informing that the carabiniere has only began allowing women to enter their ranks in 2000. He continued to say that the carabiniere is still building a relationship with the women on the force, but that their contributions have made the force stronger.
