Airbnb’s Monopoly in Florence

Airbnb in Florence exceeded 15 million euros in profit in September alone. With 9,226 available lodgings in Tuscany, the Florence center holds the highest number of tourist accommodations after Paris. The popularity of Airbnb is also leading unofficial proprietors to host tourists. This allows them to avoid the city tax Airbnb that subject which will increase as of January 1, 2018.

The city council member for the tourism department, Paola Concia, said that Florence is thinking of fining the unregistered property owners 100 thousand euros. Fiavet Tuscany’s (association of travel and tourism) president, Pier announced that a list must be kept of all official Airbnbs and those that are not.

According to Fiavet, tourism is turning cities, including Florence, into “Disneyland.” In hopes of giving the city back to the people, Palazzo Vecchio plans on signing an agreement with Airbnb to pass from the current earnings of 4 million euros a year to 7 million euros in city tax collection.
