Bread & Organic Products at the ‘Fierucola del Pane’

FIERUCOLA DEL PANE organic market, Sept. 1 – 2.  Piazza Santissima Annunizata, Florence.  9 am – 7 pm. Free admission.

The unmistakable aroma of bread hot out of a Tuscan wood-burning oven will fill the air at Piazza Santissima Annunizata on both days from 9 am – 8 pm.  Each loaf will reflect a regional recipe and the creative use of flour – whether made with whole wheat, gluten-free such as buckwheat, soy, emmer (farro) – or ancient varieties of grain, often stone ground.

For in addition to the Fierucola’s crafts, woven fabrics, distilled flower essences, farm fresh vegetables, wine, olive oil and honey, breads using natural starters will be kneaded and left to rise continuously.  The baked goods will be sold directly by producers from all over Italy, who will use the occasion to exchange their knowledge and trade secrets.

On Saturday, natural leaven will be distributed in a 3 pm workshop given by Annalisa De Luca, author of the book “Making Bread:  50 Recipes.”  Those interested should bring a jar to take natural leavening home.

Later the same day, piazza and focaccia focacce will be baked in the square starting at 5:30 pm and music will played. The Fierucola will also offer hands-on Rificolona (paper lanterns for Florence’s September 8 holiday) construction workshops for children at 3 pm; reservations suggested, which can be made by calling 328 1340777.
