Colin Firth in ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’

This month audiences at the Odeon theatre (piazza Strozzi) can expect a wide-ranging selection of films in English based on true stories from Dunkirk, to Marc Francis’s documentary on Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh. Add to the mix thrillers like The Beguiled directed by Sofia Coppola and the action packed Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Below is a preview of the films playing through the end of the month.

Sun. 17 (4:10 pm): Dunkirk

May 1940 during WW2, Allied soldiers stranded on the shores of Dunkirk await their fate as German forces quickly advance surrounding the beaches. This beautifully crafted piece directed by Christopher Nolan starring Tom Hardy, newcomers Fionn Whitehead, Harry Styles and more, depicts the naval and civilian sacrifice to remove as many soldiers as possible. Through this tense and dramatic portrait of Dunkirk, the audience can experience what the soldiers felt while waiting for their rescue or a worst-case scenario.

Thurs. 21 – Sun. 24: (4:15, 6:30, 9 pm), Mon. 25 (6:45 pm) Wed. 27 (9 pm): Kingsman: The Golden Circle

The sequel to 2014’s Kingsman: The Secret Service, Golden Circle follows Kingsman and his discovery of another spy organization centered in the United States. Together they must protect the world and eliminate their common enemy. The Golden Circle maintains the action heavy and comedic virtue of the first, and feature an all-star cast: Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges and more.

Tues. 26 (9 pm): Walk with Me

A documentary, based on Buddhist activist and teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, serves as a moment of relief from the pace and stress of modern life. It is filmed in rural France’s Plum Village, where Zen Buddhists demonstrate what it means to slow down and observe the world through a clarifying lens. While observing the teachings of Vietnamese teacher Thich Naht Hanh, directors Marc J. Francis, Max Pugh and narration by Benedict Cumberbatch, it expresses the pace of the mindfulness lifestyle they follow.

Thurs. 28 & Sat 30 (4:30, 6:30, 9 pm) Fri 29 (4:30 & 6:30 pm): The Beguiled

Based on the novel The Beguiled written by Thomas P. Cullinan, the film is set during the American Civil War. It follows runaway Union soldier John McBurney, played by Colin Farrell, seeking refuge in an all girls’ school in Virginia. His arrival as the only man in an abandoned town triggers betrayal and sexual tensions turned dangerous rivalries in the all-female cast including Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst.  (rachel hinojosa)
