The Festival of Europe & ‘The State of the Union’

The city of Florence again hosts the Festival of Europe program of cultural, artistic and educational offerings, sponsored by the European University Institute, regional government offices and private organizations, with a visit to 15th century villa and garden.

In conjunction with the Festival of Europe, two days of talks, presentations and discussions “The State of the Union” are planned in the Badia Fiesolana and Palazzo Vecchio from May 4 – 6.

Among the participants are Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni; President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker; President of the European Council Donald Tusk; EU Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini; President of the Italian Senate and anti-Mafia judge Pietro Grasso in addition to Angelino Alfano, Italian Foreign Minister.

With the theme “Building a People’s Europe” the program explores issues relevant to the future of Europe including the refugee crisis, the UK referendum, free movement of citizens and pertinent economic issues.

“State of the Union” events can be attended by invitation only, but the two days can be live streamed at the official site, www.stateoftheunion.eui.eu.

The Festival of Europe’s cultural program begins May 4 and 5 with “A Love Supreme,” a dance performance choreographed to the music of John Coltrane. The piece, sponsored by the Fabbrica Europa Foundation for Contemporary Arts, explores the inner tension between complex rhythm and essence (Stazione Leopolda, viale Fratelli Rosselli, 5. 9 pm. The European University Institute invites the public to visit the Villa Salviati on the Saturday, May 6 “Open Day.” The villa contains the historical archives of the European Union surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens. The organizers have planned a day filled with cultural and artistic activities for guests and children.  Bus 25 from San Marco stop: Il Cionfo 01.

In the morning, visitors can join a guided tour of the gardens, chapel, library and other facilities. Events include circus acts, juggling, games and the workshop “Hello, Europe.” Concerts will be performed at lunchtime and at 4:30 pm. Villa Salviati is accessible only on foot from gates at via Bolognese, 156 and via Faentina, 261. Parking available at Salviati FS train stop on via Faentina.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Erasmus Program European Student Exchange Program, the Erasmus Foundation presents outdoors music and dance on Sunday, May 7 (Piazza Santissima Annunziata at 6 pm; free admission). At 4 pm, information will be offered for visitors to explore opportunities offered by the Erasmus Program.  (rita kungel)
