Florence’s Bellariva Swimming Pool

When the heat in Florence becomes overwhelming, an alternative for cooling off is to head to a public swimming pool. From luxurious resorts to complexes with a family-like atmosphere, there are varying options to swim and sunbathe under the Florentine sun.  Click here to see Part 1 of Magenta’s pool series featuring Le Pavoniere and Flog.

For those who prefer to socialize at sunlit café tables or in family-designated areas, the Piscina Bellariva, located near the Arno on Lungarno Aldo Moro, is a great place to spend a lazy summer day. With both a baby pool and a larger pool where it is possible to swim laps, it appeals to both families and groups of teenagers and adults.

The pool remains open all year. At the beginning of September, Bellariva’s pools are surrounded by giant glass enclosures that keep guests warm while they swim during the winter months.

A popular feature of the Piscina Bellariva is the pool’s pizzeria and café. The pool’s bar serves food that suits every meal and mood, from chocolate and cream filled croissants to fresh watermelon to steaming plates of fresh pasta. The bar also serves cold beer and a wide array of ice cream treats for those that want to cool down.

Order your food or beverage of choice and enjoy it with friends on the patio located just outside of the cafe, or lie down on a towel and relax on one of the grassy areas outside of the pool. The trees surrounding the pool provide ample shade for those who want to stay out of the sun, while lounge chairs (€3 daily charge) are available for visitors working on their tan.

Please note that it is mandatory to wear a swim cap, which must be brought from home beforehand. Families with young children should also be aware of the fact that there is a separate changing room for children up to the age of 12, located conveniently next to the kid’s pool.  (margaux glovier)
