Florence’s New Stadium Unveiled

Characterized by a glowing futuristic design, the project for the new Florence stadium — which will be constructed where the Mercafir fruit and vegetable wholesale market is located today in Novoli — was officially presented in Palazzo Vecchio by Andrea della Valle, owner of the Fiorentina soccer team.

The stadium will have a seating capacity of 40,000, and places to park 700 cars and 1,000 bikes.  Under the luminous roof will also be an adjacent shopping mall and hotel.  The sports center, according to mayor Dario Nardella, will be also accessible via tram and train.  With an estimated expense of 420 million euro, according to city officials construction on the new structure is slated to begin in 2019.
