Fri. – Sun. Nov. 25 – 27: International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women Commemoration. Palazzo Vecchio, Florence.

Violence against women is no small issue. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25 was decreed by the United Nation in memory of the three Mirabal sisters that were cruelly murdered in their opposition to dictator Rafael Trujillo. Florence, in collaboration with the Uffizi Gallery, offers tribute to this day by showcasing Judith Slaying Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi in Palazzo Vecchio for a three-day period.

Gentileschi was an extraordinary female Baroque painter who often depicted suffering female warriors.

The painting highlights the triumphant moment in which Judith of the Old Testament avenges her people. The artwork parallels Gentileschi’s own life as she courageously stood trial against her sexual abuser. Both the piece and the artist symbolize a greater recognition of abused women, becoming the voice of female victims everywhere in order to speak out against violence and giving them a hope of redemption.

In addition, Donatello’s bronze of the same subject will be showcased alongside the painting in the Sala dei Gigli. (grace liu)
