Meeting the Artist Behind the Craft at the Ceramics Fair

In a world where everyone is distant from the products they are buying and even more distant from who is making what they buy, getting to know the creator behind a piece is a rare opportunity.  Shoppers will have the pleasure of meeting the artists behind the pieces they purchase at the Ceramics Festival in Piazza SS. Annunziata on October 7 and 8 from 9 am to 6 pm.

Visitors will be able to find a range of ceramic works by 83 craftsmen coming from all over Europe to have the opportunity to sell their handmade creations to the public.  There will be something for everyone with ceramic pieces such as flowerpots, jewelry, sculptures of different sizes and shapes, candleholders, teapots and much more.

Guests of all ages will enjoy the festival. German potter Thomas Benirschke, will have a “magic wheel” so that children can make their own ceramic art.

The festival will also host an exhibition known as, “More Clay, Less Plastic.” Launched by Lauren Moreira on Facebook in 2014, the aim of the project is to create an online international network bringing together ceramicists and shoppers. The message the group wants to convey is expressed in the title.  They use both an artisan and environmental platforms to promote ceramics as a sustainable alternative.

While “More Clay, Less Plastic” informs people of the benefits of clay versus plastic, it adds value to the event by emphasizing the durability and craftsmanship of the ceramic products. The exhibition works in conjunction with the overall meaning of the festival: to bring the audience closer to the art. (deanna carbone)
