OpenArtCode: A Contemporary Art Show in a Renaissance Space

OpenArtCode can be visited through May 8 at the Salon of Donatello in the Basilica of San Lorenzo.  The exhibition in Florence marks the 10-year anniversary of the OpenArtCode group and features the works of 52 avant-garde artists from all over the world including Sandra Muss, David Wiener, Etienne Pierart, and Sumio Inoue, to name a few.

Curator Vito Abba says, “The strength of the OpenArtCode group lies in the quality of the artists’ work, offering visitors a varied but harmonious selection of works of great beauty.”  The collection brings together new contemporary pieces and places them in a space famous for its rich history of Renaissance art, contributing to a dialogue between the two.

The show consists of painting, sculpture, installations, digital art, and photography. Noteworthy exhibits include the works of Japanese artist Sumio Inoue, who imprints photographs on uneven, handmade rice paper, highlighting the stark contrast between light and dark. Other displays include those of American artist Enrico Embroli whose use of monochromes inspire a sense of three-dimensionality and those of Italian artist Stefano Sanna whose use of found materials creates layers of depth which seem to resemble nature.

OpenArtCode is open 10 am to 5:30 pm. For more information visit www.openartcode.com/florence.  (olivia pugsley)
