Sunday, Nov. 26: The Return of the Florence Marathon

For many, running the length of 42 kilometres (26 miles) seems impossible or perhaps unthinkable, however, Florence Marathon is a yearly occurrence that brings thousands of athletes and enthusiasts from not only Italy, but all over the world. Not only are there newcomers, but many previous participators to return again for another chance. The total number of those who signed up is 10,000.

The race will begin at 8:30 am from Piazza Duomo on Sunday 26 and all runners are expected to arrive at the finish line (back at Piazza Duomo) before 2:30 pm. The fastest, instead, are predicted to arrive around 11 am and noon.

While there will be prizes for the three fastest women, men and wheelchair and hand bike racers, everyone will also receive a medal and final refreshment for participating.

The race, as most years, will wind through the streets of Florence’s historic center, passing by the main areas such as Piazza della Signoria, Ponte Vecchio, Piazza Santa Croce, Piazza Pitti. On route scenic views will be visible running along Lungarno Vespucci and Piazza Ognissanti (expect roads closed to traffic from 7 am to end of the run; see Florence’s La Repubblica news site for details).

There will be plenty of refreshment points with water, tea and energy drinks every 5 km (from the first 5 km). Runners can also re-charge their batteries by snacking on a piece of fruit, which they can find along the way every 10 km. Sponge relays will be available every 5 km of the race (starting from 7.5 km into the race).

Toilet facilities will be located at the departure zone, the arrival area and at the wardrobe section (Piazza Duomo) as well as at refreshment points. A locker room will be accessible from 7 am – 4 pm.

Although the deadline for sign-up was Nov. 17, anyone, particularly those who don’t see the fun in running, can head down town to watch the ‘spectacle.’ There are many squares and streets to choose from, some of which are previously mentioned, however if aiming for one of the more popular choices such as Piazza Duomo and Santa Croce, it is recommended to arrive early.

To finish the day’s events, a celebratory happening will take place at 7 pm; the ‘Marathon Party,’ open to all athletes and accompanying guests. Featuring a Tuscan-themed dinner, live music (included in the sign-up fee, admission for all until full capacity, Obihall, Lungarno Aldo Moro). (karen gee)
