Time Traveling for Kids during ‘Festa della Toscana’

106701_00001r1-copyIn 1786, Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo announced the reform of the Penal Code, which involved the abolition of the death penalty in Tuscany, the first region to do so in all of Italy. Each year, Tuscans celebrate the Festa della Toscana on November 30 to mark the anniversary of this historic moment.

This year, the Galileo Museum (piazza dei Giudici 1) is holding a program for kids in collaboration with the Specola museum and the Historical Archives of Florence

On Wednesday, November 30 at 4 pm, 5 pm and 6 pm the halls of the museum will be filled with characters from the 18th century high society. They will provide guided tours and visitors will be able to participate in activities that will bring scientific discoveries to life and gain an understanding of ancient inventions. At 6 pm the Piccolo Coro Melograno children’s choir will sing “Messer Galileo,” the song presented in the 52nd annual Zecchino d’Oro international music festival in 2009.

At 7 pm visitors will be able to taste traditional Florentine dishes and street food from the eighteenth century as well as the present day.  The museum will extend its hours that day until 8:30 pm.
