‘American Sculptors in Florence’: a Historical Talk in English

A work by Hiram Powers

The British Institute of Florence is hosting Jason Arkles, who will speak in English on “American sculptors in Florence” in a lecture via Zoom (meeting ID: 879 0230 4600, password: 5NWhBL), on Wednesday, July 22 at 6 pm.  Known for his signature sculpture created in Florence, “The Greek Slave,” Hiram Powers (1805 – 1883) had a studio on via dei Serragli.  Greenough (1805 – 1882) studied under Lorenzo Bartolini, a sculptor who infused his pieces in the neoclassical style with naturalism.  Bartolini and Greenough worked in the deconsecrated church of San Raffaele Arcangelo on Borgo San Frediano, now the premises of the Charles H. Cecil Studios, which is dedicated to drawing and painting from life in the naturalistic tradition.

Lasting about 40 minutes, the talk will be followed by a discussion.  A donation is welcome, 50% of which will help the Institute, with the remaining 50% given to the Firenze per Firenze initiative, which is raising funds to support people in need in the wake of the Coronavirus emergency.
