Calcio Storico Final: ‘Rossi’ Beat ‘Azzurri’

For the second consecutive year, the “Rossi” (Reds) of Santa Maria Novella defeated the “Azzurri” (Blues) of Santa Croce to win the Calcio Storico final.  After the “Azzurri” being ahead for most of the match, the “Rossi” made a spectacular comeback, also helped by the expulsion of two “Azzurri” players, to tie the game at the final whistle 7 – 7.  The match went into overtime, when the “Rossi” scored the winning goal.

A combination of football, rugby, and wrestling, Calcio Storico is a historic sport, first played in Florence during the Renaissance.
