Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women 2025

November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.  In Florence, commemorations will start with a flash mob of protest featuring readings and speeches at Piazza Signoria in front of Palazzo Vecchio (City Hall) from 11 am to 1 pm. All the historic medieval gates will be illuminated in red, in addition to the copy of Michelangelo’s David situated in Piazza Signoria.

November 25 was chosen as the date for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women by the United Nations in remembrance of the four Mirabal sisters, political activists in Dominican Republic, who were assassinated on that date in 1960 because they opposed the dictatorship of General Rafael Trujillo.
