€1 Museum Admission and Evening Hours for European Heritage Days

A room at the Bargello museum

Florence joins the European Union’s annual European Heritage Days on the weekend of Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 September, with an extraordinary opportunity for locals and visitors alike. On the evening of Saturday 27 September, a selection of Florence’s most renowned state museums will open their doors from 7  – 10 pm (last admission at 9:15 pm), offering entry at the symbolic cost of just 1 euro.

The participating museums are:

  • Galleria dell’Accademia (Via Ricasoli 58/60) – home to Michelangelo’s unrivalled David, the magnificent statue which has become known as the epitome of the Renaissance man
  • Uffizi Gallery (Piazzale degli Uffizi 6, second floor only) – where Botticelli’s Birth of Venus continues to enchant, an icon of the Renaissance, and its cultural emphasis on beauty.
  • Bargello National Sculpture Museum (Via del Proconsolo 4) – the city’s treasure trove of Renaissance sculpture, featuring masterpieces by Donatello, Michelangelo, and Cellini.
  • Medici Chapels (Piazza di Madonna degli Aldobrandini 6) – the monumental mausoleum of the Medici family, designed in part by Michelangelo.
  • National Archaeological Museum of Florence (Piazza Santissima Annunziata 1) – renowned for its outstanding Etruscan, Roman, and Egyptian collections, including the famed Chimera of Arezzo.
  • Opificio delle Pietre Dure (Via degli Alfani 78) – a unique museum dedicated to the artistry of semi-precious stones and Florence’s prestigious tradition of restoration and conservation.

For one evening only, these landmarks of art and history can be experienced in a new light. Whether it is standing before David without the usual crowds or discovering the glittering mosaics of the Medici Chapels by night, the European Heritage Days invite visitors to rediscover Florence’s cultural heritage with fresh eyes.  (Molly Evans)
