‘Entre Dos Mundos’: Florence’s 2024 Latin American Film Festival

The protagonist of ‘Frida,’ a biopic based on the artist’s diary and letters

Back for the seventh year, Entre Dos Mundos, a Latin American film festival, returns to Florence with an exciting array of cinematic events from September 19 – 22 . It will be held in Cinema La Compagnia (via Cavour 50/r) and Cinema Astra (piazza Beccaria 9) from September 19 – 22.

Entre Dos Mundos aims to bridge the gap between Italian and Latin American culture through cinema and literature, offering an accessible and fun way to interact with the culture for anyone who is interested. The screenings are all free entry. Entre Dos Mundos will take viewers on a tour across Mexico, Argentina, the Andes, Venezuela, Bolivia and Spain.

The festival begins Thursday, September 19, with ‘Perdidos en La Noche’ directed by Amat Escalante, a film which tells the story of a son, Emiliano, who goes searching for his mother, Paloma who has gone missing, and along the way stumbles on disquieting secrets regarding her disappearance (4 pm). Another highlight will be ‘Frida’ directed by Carla Gutierrez. The famous artist’s life will be told in her own words taken from her diary, allowing us a more personal view of her life than ever before (8:30 pm) On Friday, September 20, ‘La Sociedad de la Nieve’ by J. A. Bayona will show the story of a team of rugby players whose plane crashed in the Andes on the way to Chile.

Alongside the screenings of Latin American films, a variety of masterclasses will be held by several guests of honour, all of whom have a unique perspective and experience working within the film industry. On Saturday, September 21 there will be a masterclass held by Carla Gutierrez about the process of editing and directing a documentary. The masterclasses are also open to the public, offering tourists and residents alike the opportunity to learn more about the processes involved producing cinema.

The founder of Entre Dos Mundos, Maria Lorena Rojas, says the festival aims “to broaden the range of visibility on films that it is increasingly rare to find in the programming of Italian cinemas.” This year in particular the festival is in partnership with the Platinum Awards, an important Spanish annual film awards.  (Evie Mauri)
