European Museum Night 2025 Offers Free or Discounted Admission

05/15/2025

‘Sala del Paradiso’ in the Cathedral Museum (Opera del Duomo)

To celebrate the cultural heritage of the European Union, the third Saturday in May is designated European Museum Night (Notte dei Musei), providing evening hours as well as free or discounted admission. It is designed for people to reflect on the important role of museums in society, and to tour them at a fraction of the cost, or at no cost.

The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo (Cathedral Museum) joins the initiative this year on May 17, offering free admission from 9 pm, with last entry at 11:30 pm, and closure at midnight.

No tickets or reservations will be required to visit the site during the special night time visiting slot.  Adults are welcome to reserve a place to participate in one of the two guided tours at 9:30 and 10:15 pm.  The opportunity is extended to families with children ages 5 to 12 at 9 and 9:30 pm, concluding with an activity on the Duomo (Cathedral) terrace.  To reserve a place, send an email specifying the number of participants and the ages of the kids to edu@duomo.firenze.it.

Open from from 7 to 10 pm, another museum that is part of European Museum Night is the Academy Gallery on via Ricasoli, home to Michelangelo’s David, other sculptures by the Renaissance sculpture in addition to medieval paintings (last entrance at 9:15 pm). The Bargello National Museum of Renaissance Sculpture (via del Proconsolo 4) and the Medici Chapels (piazza Madonna degli Aldobrandini 6) are both accessible from 7 to 9:50 pm.  The latter features Michelangelo’s statues of Day and Night and Dusk and Dawn marking the tombs of the Duke of Nemours and the Duke of Urbino.  The San Marco Museum (piazza San Marco), which hosts luminous early Renaissance frescoes by Beato Angelico, is also opening its doors from 7:15 to 9:45 (last entry at 9:15 pm) with guided visits also scheduled at 7:30, 8 and 8:40 pm.

All four sites have a €1 entry fee.

The signature floor of the Uffizi Gallery can also be exceptionally visited between 7 and 10 pm (last entrance: 8:30 pm) with €1 admission that can be purchased at the ticket office starting 6:50 pm.  It showcases works from late Gothic, early and High Renaissance masters, mainly Italian, from Giotto to Lippi, Leonardo da Vinci to Giorgione and Mantegna as well as pieces by European artists of the period such as Durer (1471 – 1528), plus Flemish and other German painters.
