Le Cure Eviction of Bookshop & Homeless

While municipal police officers have cleared out unhoused people and their possessions from the Le Cure underpass in July 2024, one legacy will remain. The informal bookshop was established in the underpass by Marco, a man who began to live there after losing his job and home, will be granted its own designated space outside the underpass.
Councilor of Security Andrea Giorgio stated that a resolution will soon be brought to the council in order to allow Marco to continue his work in another space with the help of an unnamed association. Giorgio said that this resolution would allow Marco to continue doing the work that has become appreciated by the residents of the Cure community.
Marco began his work in fall of 2023, when he began allowing rentals from his book collection for a small fee. Eventually residents of Le Cure began to contribute books to his endeavor, which allowed him to amass books from across many genres and authors. Using the profits his project generated, Marco was eventually able to support other unhoused people in similar situations.
Not all those evicted, however, were so lucky. The clearing of the underpass for “hygienic reasons” led to some losing mattresses and other possessions. The decision to empty out the underpass of its residents has led to criticism, including from representatives from the Sinistra Progetto Comune who stated that the eviction would not address the underlying problems faced by the unhoused community members.
