Final Free Movies in English at the 2023 ‘Apriti Cinema’

The Apriti Cinema Festival, also known as the Open Cinema Festival, hosts a film under the stars every night at 9:45 pm through August 7. The festival invites special guests, the public and different cultures to the courtyard to enjoy the international films. The festival is free to all attendees, but with limited availability each night.
The program includes classic Italian titles and films from the international festivals including: The Florence Korea Film Festival, Middle East Now, the Festival dei Popoli, Lo Schermo dell’Arte and New Italian Cinema Events (N.I.C.E.).
The films vary in language, length, genre and origin. An overview of titles that are in English or have English subtitles is available below.
Friday, August 4
“The Fugitive Kind” (1960) | English with Italian subtitles | United States
Sidney Lumet’s film is about the arrival of Valentine “Snakeskin” Xavier in a small Mississippi town. He moved in search of a new and calmer life, but found a complex relationship with a woman instead. The 119-minute film is a tribute to Anna Magnani.
Sunday, August 6
“Franco Zeffirelli” (2023) & “A Tea with Mussolini” (1999) | English with Italian subtitles | Italy and United Kingdom
The short film, “Franco Zeffirelli,” is a 13-minute depiction of the life of director and former Senator. Zeffirelli’s life is brought to the big screen by Italian directors Matteo Cichero and Matteo Mascotto. “Tea with Mussolini” will follow. Set in WWII Florence, the 1999 semi-biographical film. stars Cher, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright, Maggie Smith and Lily Tomlin. The movie focuses on the story of a semi-orphaned Florentine teenager (Zeffirelli), who is part of a circle of English expatriates in Florence during the last days of fascism.

In George Cukor’s 114-minute film, Gioia leaves Italy for a new life in Nevada with her husband, Gino. They soon must navigate the challenges of relationships and American culture.
