Florence’s 2020 Spring Plant and Flower Market: Better Late Than Never

Until June 2, 2020: PLANT & FLOWER MARKET. Via Vittorio Emanuele II, 4.  Open 8 am – 8 pm.  Free admission.

It’s finally time to visit the Giardino dell’Orticoltura for the Tuscan Society of Horticulture’s Spring 2020 Plant and Flower fair.  The market features 60 specialist vendors offering a wide selection of plants, flowers, vases, outdoor furniture and more. This annual event happens to be taking place a month late due to the Coronavirus lockdown.  In this post-lockdown phase, guests are required to wear masks, and will be allowed to enter at different intervals to accommodate current safety regulations, which include maintaining a distance of a least one meter (3.2 ft.) from each another.  Visitors can stroll through the beautiful garden, with its antique 19th century greenhouse centerpiece and admire the range of products offered.

The fair hosts vendors selling all kinds of flowers, from roses–both ancient and modern varieties–peonies, azaleas, camellias, orchids, rhododendrons and hydrangeas down to more common varieties such as petunias, geraniums and marigolds. Also on display are bonsai, exotic cacti, citrus plants, climbing plants, indoor plants and aquatic plants plus a wide range of herbs.  For those looking for something even more eccentric, carnivorous plants can be found at Un Angolo di Deserto di Castellaneta’s stand.

Returning this year are artisans from Terrecotte Artistiche Toscane selling both new and antique terracotta pots. Several stands will also be exhibiting plant-based soaps and essential oils, organic herbs, natural fibre clothing and a variety of lavender products. On top of this there will be gardening equipment and books, floral prints, lawn furniture, potting soil, fruit trees, berry plants, rhizomes and tulip bulbs available to purchase.  (stephanie d’amelio)
