Florence’s Cinema Odeon Programming Now Online

A scene from “I Miserabili”

The Cinema Odeon’s film offerings will now be accessible online starting Monday, May 18, 2020.  Florence’s historic theatre  in Piazza Strozzi has decided not to wait until June 2020 to resume its programming.  Audiences can purchase viewing on the MioCinema platform, one that requires registration—which is free—to log in.

To watch a new or newish release will cost €7, films from the Odeon archives will cost between €2,99 and 3,99.  The movies will be available both in English and Italian, either dubbed or subtitled.  One film can be chosen for viewing at time, and no subscription to the service is required.  Each title will be accompanied by the availability of a selection of other movies on a similar theme, or by the same director.

The kick-off comes with “I Miserabili.” Not to be confused with the Victor Hugo literary classic “Les Misérables,” the 2019 feature was filmed in the Paris suburb where some of the book is set, but updated to the present day with conflict between police and a juvenile delinquent.  This debut work by Ladj Ly won the Jury Prize at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and represented France at the 2020 Academy Awards.

Following “I Miserabili,” “Dopo il Matrimonio” starring Julianne Moore in addition to the Canadian movie, “Matthias e Maxime” by Xavier Dolan which was presented at last year’s Cannes festival, will be available. The Odeon management is still working on a schedule with a variety of genres for the film aficionado.
