Florence’s June 1 Public Transport Strike

A citywide public transport strike has been scheduled on Tuesday, June 1 at a time when trade unions are negotiating the terms of a new contract.  In a show of solidarity, many employees will stay home: Florence’s ATAF buses will not be running between 9:15 and 11:45 am and from 3:15 pm to the end of the day.  Trams will only be accessible between 6:30 – 9:30 am and again from 5 to 8 pm.  Regional buses throughout Tuscany will guarantee service just from 4:15 am to 8:15 am and again from 12:30 to 3:30 pm.  The strike is organized by the Filt-Cgil, Fit-Cisl,Uil-trasporti, Faisa-Cisal, and Ugl Fna unions that are asking that better working conditions be guaranteed in addition to more efficient service for the public.  These organizations have planned a protest at the ATAF “scalette” bus stop near the Santa Maria Novella train station from 10:30 am to 12 noon.

The company that operates the city’s tram lines is asking passengers to find alternative means of transportation, keeping in mind current COVID safety protocols.  For information on tram service, commuters can call the toll free number 800.964424 from a land line or 199.229300, which will have charges applied, from a cell phone.  (rosanna cirigliano)
