Twelve cellos and performers on stage at Florence’s 17th century Teatro della Pergola is a surprise for chamber music lovers on Saturday, October 15 (4 pm). The dozen musicians are all former students of the late cellist Franco Rossi of the Quartetto Italiano who will inaugurate the 2016/2017 Amici della Musica season.

They will play all together and in small groups for the 10th anniversary of Rossi’s death in order to pay homage to their beloved maestro, whose legacy is impressed in their minds and those fortunate enough to have heard him play.

The cello ensembles will interpret a wide array of music from Bach to Villa Lobos, highlighting the works that were dear to Mr. Rossi’s heart. There of this concert’s pieces are world’s premiere and certain to honor Rossi’s memory with their debut.

Mario Brunello, victor of the 1986 International Tchaikovsky Competition and current owner of Rossi’s 17th century Maggini cello, will lead the recital. Brunello is a world-renowned musician, capable of the highest level of performance as cellist and maestro.

The program, like the participants, is eclectic. It comprises pieces by Bach as well as one by Gustavo Tavares titled “Egum,” which references Beethoven and his own Afro-Brazilian roots. Jorge Andrés Bosso has written “When the Answer Becomes the Question,” inspired by the Presto movement of Beethoven String Quartet No. 14. Another work is Bachianas Brasileras. This Villa Lobos piece combines Bach’s structure with Brazilian melodies and rhythms for an impressive merging of two distinct styles.

“Franco Rossi left a profound impression on each of his students as well as on all the musicians who were fortunate enough to listen to him play,” says Mario Brunello. We would like to thank the Maestro by performing together.”   Tickets are € 12, 14 and €25, € 5 for conservatory and music students.  (jordan siccardi & rosanna cirigliano)
