Free Luggage Storage at the Duomo

A luggage storage office opened in May, 2023 in Piazza del Duomo, next to the Opera del Duomo museum (piazza del Duomo 9), for visitors to the Cathedral complex to store bags free of charge.

Visitors to the Duomo, Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistery, and the Duomo museum will have to leave their bulky luggage, such as backpacks and suitcases, at this luggage check. This will be implemented to make the visit to these monuments easier for security reasons and for the visitors themselves. Each monument will have staff dedicated to directing visitors to the luggage storage facility.

Lorenzo Luchetti, the general manager of the monuments of the Duomo of Florence, said “it is a free service that the Opera offers to holders of the Brunelleschi pass ticket and it is the intention of our institution to gradually extend it to all visitors to our monuments.”

Another new implementation to the monuments in Piazza Duomo is that reservations for Giotto’s Bell Tower will now be necessary as of May 3. The board of Santa Maria del Fiore decided to make the change to avoid long wait times for visitors.

The first bookable entrance to visit the Bell Tower will be at 8:15 am and the last at 6:45 pm, a total of 15 daily entrances for a maximum of 120 people per slot. The monuments of the Duomo of Florence, besides from the entrance to the Cathedral which is free, can be visited by purchasing three types of tickets: the “Brunelleschi pass” which includes a visit to the Dome, the Bell Tower, the Crypt of Santa Reparata, the Baptistery and the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo; The “Giotto Pass” with which you can visit the monuments and the museum with the exception of the Dome; the “Ghiberti pass” to visit the Baptistery, the Crypt of Santa Reparata and the Museum. All three tickets are valid for three days starting from the day of activation. (Abby Capra)
