Free Outdoor Fitness Classes Return Across Florence This Summer

With summer underway, Florence residents and visitors once again have the opportunity to stay active thanks to the return of Palestre all’Aperto, the city’s free outdoor fitness program. Organized by the Municipality of Florence, the initiative will continue through September 18, with a short summer break from August 10 to 21. The program transforms parks, gardens, and public squares across the city into open-air gyms, making physical activity accessible to people of all ages without the need for a gym membership.
This year’s schedule offers a wide variety of activities led by qualified instructors and local sports associations. Morning sessions focus on lower-impact exercise, including gentle gymnastics, adapted physical activity, and Tai Chi Chuan, while afternoon and evening classes introduce more energetic options such as functional training, pilates, and boxing.
Activities are spread throughout all five Florentine districts, allowing residents to participate close to home. In Quartiere 1, classes are held in spaces including Piazza D’Azeglio and Giardino Maragliano in San Jacopino. Quartiere 2 hosts activities at Villa Favard and the Giardino di Via del Mezzetta, while Quartiere 3 offers sessions in locations such as Viale Tanini and Piazza Felice Bacci in Ponte a Ema.
Residents in Quartoliere 4 can take advantage of classes at Parco Il Boschetto, Villa Vogel, Giardino San Bartolo, and San Lorenzo a Greve. In Quartiere 5, activities take place at Giardino Baden Powell, Piazza Primo Maggio, Giardino Lippi, Piazza delle Medaglie d’Oro, and the Amphitheater of Le Piagge.
The initiative has become increasingly popular in recent years by providing residents with free opportunities to exercise while encouraging greater use of Florence’s public spaces. Beyond promoting healthy lifestyles, Palestre all’Aperto also helps create opportunities for community connection and allows participants to enjoy the city’s parks and green spaces in a different way.
Whether joining regularly or simply trying a class for the first time, participants can enjoy a summer of free fitness activities while taking advantage of Florence’s outdoor environment.
