Fresu and Petrella: One-of-a-Kind Jazz Duo Comes to Florence

Gianluca Petrella

The second annual A Jazz Supreme music series, directed by Fernando Fanutti of Musicus Concentus and the pianist Simone Graziano, will begin Friday, Oct. 12, with a performance by Paolo Fresu and Gianluca Petrella in the Teatro Verdi in Florence. The festival, which will continue until Nov. 30, is inspired by John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme Jazz Festival held annually in the United Kingdom.

The kick off of this eight-part concert dedicated to contemporary jazz, is considered to be a special performance by Fresu and Petrella. These two big-players in jazz have collaborated before in the past and along with their technical preparation, their absolute creativity will allow for a performance unlike any before. Both artists have ventured to incorporating unique styles like electronic jazz.

The duo will be presenting original African-American pieces and viewers are advised to be prepared for anything since jazz itself is an art filled with improvisation and the musicians are both known for their spontaneity. Opening for Fresu and Petrella will be Handlogic, the winners of the 2016 Rock Concert of Controradio.

The other events will all be held at Sala Vanni in Piazza del Carmine.  (beatrice paolucci)
