Groceries for the Environment in Florence

Local grocery stores in Florence are making a move to save the environment. Unicoop Firenze has recently announced that they will stop selling single-use plastic products, such as plates, napkins, and utensils, as of June 1.

Plastic utensils make up the bulk of non recycled waste in Italy, making up around 1,500 tons of waste total. This move to stop selling these products is a move in favor of the environment. A bold move considering that Unicoop Firenze makes upwards of three million euros annually on these products alone.

This change is in anticipation of several eco-friendly Europe-wide laws that will be put into effect in 2021. Unicoop Firenze is just getting a head start on these laws. (katy rose sparks)
