James Conlon & the Maggio Orchestra Interpret Dvorak

James Conlon

James Conlon returns to lead the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in a program dedicated to the music of the Czech composer, Antonin Dvorak, on February 7. The concert begins with a symphonic poem ‘The Golden Spinning Wheel,’ inspired by the poem of the same name found in Kytice, a collection of folk ballads by Karel Erben. Following this is the popular Symphony No. 9 in E minor ‘From the New World.’ Dvorak composed it in 1893, while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York City. He took inspiration for this symphony from the Native American and African-American music that he heard while traveling in the U.S.A.

Conlon is the music director of the Los Angeles Opera and the principal conductor of RAI Symphony Orchestra. (anne lokken)
