Kafka, Prague, Movie Screening & Buffet at the ‘Balagan Café’
Cultural awareness and understanding will always be a relevant topic in today’s world of ever-increasing globalization. Balagan Cafe was founded in the Synagogue of Florence 11 years ago by musician Enrico Fink with precisely this precept in mind; the cafe strives to create a permanent space of cultural dialogue centered around Florence’s Jewish community. Through presenting a highly nuanced view of the contemporary Jewish world, this cultural and musical fair aims to overcome any harmful societal barriers associated with the community and provide a valuable contribution to city life in general.
The Balagan Cafe educates in ways that are informative yet engaging, including book presentations, societal debates, and cultural concerts. Opening at 7 pm on Thursday, July 25, Jewish artist Simcha Jelinek, in his speech entitled “The Prague of Franz Kafka,” will expand on the world portrayed by the very famous Prague-born novelist.
Following this event is the Conversation with Claudio Vercelli, contemporary historian, journalist, and professor of Jewish Studies at the LIMEC, who will share with attendees his unique perspective.
To close off the evening, there will be a film screening of “Kidnapped” (2023), by Marco Bellochio. The movie depicts the true story of young Jewish boy Edgardo Mortara, born 1851, who is forcibly taken from his family after it is discovered that a Christian maid has secretly baptized him as Catholic in a fit of desperate concern for his health. The remainder of the film follows his life as he is raised as a Christian in Bologna on the orders of thePope himself. Even more fascinating, the film will be introduced by the great-granddaughter of the story’s protagonist, professor Elena Mortara.
In addition, available for booking is an aperitif-dinner consisting of kofta, which are balls of spiced minced meat (or vegan substitute), bourekas, or pastries with a savory filling, tzimmes, a colorful carrot stew, and a fruit basket. The unique cultural experience provided this Thursday is just one in the weekly program offered by the Balagan Cafe. By spreading information about current Jewish issues to the general public and sharing cultural items such as film and food, these events allow visitors to diversify their perspective and connect more closely with the cultures of the world.
