Lecture in English: ‘New Jerusalem:’ Florence, the Medici & Jews during the Renaissance

On July 8, Lisa Kaborycha will speak on New Jerusalem: Florence, the Medici and the Jews during the Renaissance as part of the British Institute of Florence’s Wednesday series of lectures in English via Zoom (meeting ID: 815 2527 3230, password: 0kZkjK). Throughout the Renaissance, the wealthy and powerful Medici family maintained a special relationship with the Jewish community. The period also saw intense political conflict and questioning of moral values, which led to a backlash from the Dominican reformer and prophet Fra Girolamo Savonarola.  Lasting about 40 minutes, the talk will be followed by a discussion.  A donation is welcome, 50% of which will help the Institute, with the remaining 50% given to the Firenze per Firenze foundation, which is raising funds to support people in need in the wake of the Coronavirus emergency.

Kaborycha holds a PhD in Medieval and Early Modern European History from the University of California, Berkeley, and has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship with the Medici Archive Project, and Harvard’s Villa I Tatti Fellowship in Italian Renaissance Studies. She is the author of two books, A Corresponding Renaissance: Letters Written by Italian Women, 1375-1650 (Oxford University Press, 2016) and A Short History of Renaissance Italy (Prentice Hall, 2011).
