New Florence Resident Parking Regulations

Those wishing to park for free in their ZCS zone of residence in the greater Florence metropolitan area must input their vehicle registration information into the SAS (Società Servizi alla Strada) online system by the end of May 2025 or risk a fine. The original deadline was April 30, but has been extended one month.

Therefore, to park for free in their neighbourhood, the carta di circolazione (vehicle registration certificate), that residents have had to display on the windscreen up to now will no longer be accepted. Vehicle number plates will now be read to verify whether they are registered.

City council member Andrea Giorgio explained that the decision to extend the deadline was made so as to accommodate for any Florentines who have encountered difficulties with the online system.

To register a vehicle’s number plate, residents must log on to the SAS site with their login details and one of the following: SPID (valid digital identity information; Italian passport; Italian driver’s license) or CIE (electronic identity card).

Then, from the drop-down menu select ‘Autorizzazioni ZTL/ZCS – Richiedi’, followed by ‘Categoria autorizzazione’, ‘ZCS’ and from the menu ‘Tipologia autorizzazione’ choose ‘Registrazione residente per sosta gratuita’.

Anyone encountering difficulties registering their number plate information can find help through the ‘URP dei Quartieri un servizio di informazione e di assistenza’ site.

This new number plate registration system was introduced alongside the parking permission system change of January 1. Those wishing to park in a ZCS zone other than their own must now acquire a parking pass (pass sosta) and display it on the windscreen. A monthly pass costs €10, half the price will be charged if one’s annual income (ISEE) is under €12,500. Owners of electric vehicles do not have to pay, but hybrid vehicles do.

The old, coloured sticker, introduced during the pandemic, will be no longer valid.

Fees for non Florence residents wishing to park in a ZCS stays the same: €50 per month in ZCS 1, €40 for other zones
