San Niccolò Tower Open to the Public Until August 31

Some of the gates, towers and fortresses that call Florence home are once again welcoming visitors inside as part of a summer program encouraging exploration of the medieval structures.

Open all month (5 – 8 pm daily): TORRE SAN NICCOLÒ.  

Built in 1324 to defend the Oltrarno neighborhood of Florence, this medieval tower built in the 1300s, it was of strategic importance when French troops under Charles VIII attacked the city of Florence in 1494.  Currently, San Niccolò is the only tower in the city to have not been lowered from its original height in a process called scapitozzata, thanks to its fortunate location behind the hill of San Miniato.  From the summit, guests can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city.
