Security Guards Assigned to Florence Trams

Specially trained security guards will be on duty in all of Florence’s trams each day until the end of the year. The service, starting the second week of November, will be provided on tram lines in seven-hour shifts at various times, between 6 am and 11 pm. According to authorities, the shift of the two security guards on each tram will depend on daily safety reports.

The purpose of this experimental project is to enhance security in the city’s public transportation system while awaiting more structural solutions from the Italian government. During a meeting with Mayor Sara Funaro on September 30, The Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi promised to implement a special plan to combat crime in the city. One of the areas that the plan will eventually cover are tramway lines (https://www.magentaflorence.com/a-special-plan-to-fight-crime-in-florence/). The Polmetro agents will be arriving in Florence to ensure passengers’ security while patrolling trams. For now, however, this project proposed by the city government, GEST, and Tram S.p.A. serves as a temporary response to the city’s safety concerns. (Paulina Juzak)
