Talk in English: Women Artists in Early Modern Italy

Detail of a work by Artemisia Gentileschi

The public is invited to the lecture, which will take place on Tuesday, March 27 at the CEA Study Center, Piazza della Repubblica, 6 at 6 pm.

The speaker, Dr. Sheila Barker, has published extensively on early women artists.

In 16th and 17th century Italy, painting professionally was very much a male-dominated career.  Only a handful of women managed to rise to the top of the profession and attain financial success.  The talk examines entrepreneurial strategies adopted by artists such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Sofonisba Anguissola and Giovanna Garzoni.
