The King’s Singers in a Free Concert at the Duomo

The famed a cappella group, The King’s Singers, will perform a concert with free admission in the Florence cathedral on Thursday, May 22 at 9 pm. The English ensemble will interpret a program entitled Peregrinación – Musica dal Nuovo Mondos, mainly comprised of pieces composed in South America both by natives and Spanish settlers This last event in the O Flos Colende series of sacred music offers free admission by reserving a place online.
The program includes the traditional processional song Hanaqpachap cussicuinin, a ode to Mary in the Quechan language in which Mary is praised in a way that reflects the culture of the Andes mountains as well as Dulce Jesús mío, a song in Spanish found in the repertoire of Jesuit missionaries to Bolivia and known for its sweet melody. Period compositions originating in Europe include Versa est in luctum by Spanish composer Sebastián de Vivanco from Avila in addition to O quam gloriosum by another native of Avila, Tomás Luis de Victoria, whose works are conserved in the musical archives of the Santa Maria del Fiore (Florence cathedral).
