The Odeon Reopens with the Movies in English

A scene from “Dune”

Although movie theatres nationwide became accessible once again on April 26, 2021 (at half capacity) after months of Covid safety regulation closures, the Odeon, Florence’s bastion of English language cinema did not reopen until just after school started this month.  Guests must show either a “Green Pass” vaccine certificate or, in the case of a U.S. citizen, a CDC card.  Click here to buy a ticket online.

September brings the new season at the Odeon theatre with two promising films.  Both take the viewer into worlds of peril and intrigue with exciting scenes and unknown outcomes in which the protagonists must conquer their fear.  Dune, based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, claims the title of the world’s best-selling science fiction work.  The adventures of James Bond continue with 007 No Time to Die.  Both films will be screened in English with Italian subtitles.

September 22 and 25 (6 and 9 pm):  DUNE

Dune, one of the most anticipated films of the year, runs for seven days through the last half of September.  In this planned two-part rendition of classic sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert, director Denis Villeneuve is joined by a stellar cast with Timothee Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Charlotte Rampling, Stellan Skarsgard and Javier Bardem.  Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) accepts the challenge of traveling to the most dangerous planet in the universe, Arrakis, to protect the future of his family and people.  The most precious resource of the universe, “spice,” a substance that extends human life and promotes expansion of thought, becomes the prize in a struggle between the forces of evil and Altreides and his companions.

October 1 and 2 (9 pm) and October 3 (3:15 and 6:35 pm: 007 NO TIME TO DIE

James Bond, retired and enjoying a tranquil life in the Caribbean, is drawn back into the world of danger and intrigue by an old friend from the CIA.  The mission—to free a kidnapped scientist—turns out to be more risky than expected, leading Bond (Daniel Craig) on the trail of an unknown villain in possession of dangerous new technology.  Directed by Cary Fugunaga, the film also stars Rami Malek and Ralph Fiennes.  (rita kungel)
