Marco, the “bookseller,” will have his own secondhand book stall at the local outdoor market in Piazza delle Cure. Additionally, there will be a space created for free book sharing inside the underpass, which he will also supervise.

Marco is a homeless man who used to live in the underpass in Le Cure. He dreamed of having a library, so he decided to open his own in the underground walkway. At the beginning Marco had only 10 books, but over time, he started collecting used books and then renting them out for a small fee in order to survive. Residents of Le Cure began bringing him new volumes, helping the underground library to expand and grow steadily. In July 2024, municipal police officers cleared out the underpass evicting the unhoused people, which caused a lot of controversy. Thanks to the support of local community, which had grown close to Marco, he is one of the fortunate ones who has managed to continue his activity.

A resolution proposed by Councilor for Welfare, Housing, and Integration Nicola Paulesu has been approved by the council. As a result, Marco is able to own book stall at the market. Furthermore, the project also provides assistance in finding housing in one of the local facilities. It will gradually lead to the establishment of a small business. Councilor Paulesu stated that this initiative is a path to independence for Marco.

It is a heartwarming story with a happy ending. Marco’s dream of having his own place with used books has come true. It shows not only his creativity and willingness to act, but also power of community and the importance of supporting those in need. (Paulina Juzak)
