Tourist Climbs Neptune Statue
A 22-year-old German tourist, a resident of Berlin, climbed the Neptune statue of the piazza della Signoria fountain to take a selfie, causing damage to the sculpture group during the night of September 4, 2023.
Surveillance cameras filmed the tourist jumping over the barrier to climb upward while placing his foot on a horse’s hoof and carriage. He did the same on the way down, with the result of the detachment of marble and decorative paint. An estimated 5,000 euro will be needed for restoration. In the meantime, the visitor has been taken in custody and will receive a hefty fine.
