New Arrivals: Florence’s March Films in English

Celebrating International Women’s Day and other events honoring women in March, the Odeon Cinema presents two new films featuring exceptional women.  Captain Marvel, a superhero action film with a woman with herculean powers in the leading role.  Next, in Gloria Bell, a daytime strait-laced office employee transforms into a capricious dance lover at night, reveling in the Los Angeles club scene.  Films are screened in English with Italian subtitles.

March 6, 9, 10, 13, 15-17 (4, 6:30 and 9:15 pm), March 7 and 8 (9 pm), March 11 and 12 (4 and 6:30 pm) and March 14 (4 pm):  CAPTAIN MARVEL

This adventure film features Brie Larson in the role of Carol Danvers, AKA Captain Marvel, a former US Air Force test pilot who develops superhuman powers through an accidental infusion of alien DNA.  The film, the first Marvel Comics offering starring a female superpower, also features the first woman director in the genre, Anna Boden.  Follow the plot when one of the universe’s most powerful heroes emerges when Earth is swept into the middle of galactic war between two alien races.  Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn and Annette Bening also have roles in the movie.

March 21 (4 pm) and March 22-24 (4:30, 6:30 and 9 pm): GLORIA BELL

This well-acted romantic comedy tells the story of a free-spirited, divorced woman who discovers dancing and clubbing in Los Angeles in mid-life.  Julianne Moore plays Gloria and meets Arnold (John Turturro) on a night out.  A relationship develops, much to the dismay and dismissal of their adult children.  Chilean Sebastian Lelio directs this remake of his Spanish language film Gloria.  (rita kungel)
