David Astori, the 31-year-old captain of the Fiorentina, passed in a hotel room in Udine, where the Serie A soccer team were staying before a scheduled March 4 game at 3 pm against Udinese.
The cause of death is thought to be a heart attack; an autopsy has been scheduled. Along with his teammates, he had undergone a routine physical just last week.
The last person to see Astori alive was Fiorentina goalie Marco Sportiello on the evening of March 3 at 11:30 pm. Lodging in a single room, he did not come down to breakfast and his massage therapist went up and made the discovery.
A native of Bergamo, and member of the Italian national soccer squad, Astori is survived by his wife and a two-year-old daughter. He came to Fiorentina after experiences with Cagliari and Roma and became captain of the Fiorentina in the summer of 2017.
All Serie A and B soccer matches scheduled today have been postponed. Fiorentina fans have already left flowers as a sign of mourning at the city’s Artemio Franchi stadium.
