Tango, ‘Dreamscape’ & ‘Cinderella’ at the FDF

The fourth and last week of the Florence Dance Festival at the Bargello will begin with a performance by Naturalis Labor on July 18 (9:15 pm). The company will interpret “Piazolla Tango” featuring the music of one of the greatest tango composers, Astor Piazolla. The work is a tribute to his music. Sultry, romantic, and daring, “Piazolla Tango” is nice shift into the sultry world of dance, while recognizing a musical icon.

The next performance on July 22 showcases the Toscana Dance Hub / Myses. Toscana Dance Hub will show a culturally diverse, untitled work, site specific to the courtyard of the Bargello National Museum. In this performance, performers from Europe and America will collaborate to celebrate the universal expression of the dance arts.

This second half of the show includes the presentation of “Dreamscape,” choreographed by Gigi Nieddu of Mystes, a hip hop based company. This project experiments with urban dance and electronic music. It is dynamic performance, playing with the opposites of music and robotic movements.

The festival concludes on July 25 with the Kaos Ballet of Florence’s twist on “Cinderella,” choreographed by Roberto Sartori and Christian Fara. In this version, Cinderella is portrayed as ugly, disadvantaged, angry, and weak. She is a symbol of society’s burdens and struggle to find normalcy. Charismatic, and nevertheless strange, the world of Cinderella is shown in an alternate lens.
