Della Robbia Infants Return to Innocenti

After a year-and-a-half restoration, eight of the 10 Della Robbia reliefs of infants in swaddling clothing have returned to the facade of the Istituto degli Innocenti (Foundling Hospital) in Florence’s Piazza Santissima Annunziata, which has historically symbolized the institute’s role in welcoming children.  Created as individual portraits in 1487 by Della Robbia family member Andrea in the workshop’s signature blue and white glazed terracotta, two of the pieces are still being restored by the personnel of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure.  To see a photo gallery of the reinstalled artworks, visit Florence’s La Repubblica news site.
