A Free Opera Arias Concert at the Teatro del Maggio

 

The young musicians who will be onstage at the July 14 Maggio concert

A free vocal concert will take place on July 14 at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale (piazzale Vittorio Gui, 1) at 9 pm. The young artists of the prestigious Academy of the Maggio will perform a selection of some of the best-loved arias of the operatic repertoire in their final performance of the two-year course. The decree for public safety allows for a total of 600 spectators in the theatre hall; non-family members will be seated at an appropriate distance. 

The talented musicians are scholarship winners of the Academy where they study all of the aspects of opera production. Every two years an international competition invites young artists from all over the world to vie for a place at the in the professional training program of the Academy. Spain, Greece, China, Italy, and Brazil are among the countries represented this year. The list of artists are: the sopranos Carmen Buendía, Rosalia Cid, Valentina Corò, Nikoleta Kapetanidou, Francesca Longari, Chiara Mogini and Marilena Ruta, the mezzo-sopranos Julia Costa and Francesca Di Sauro, the tenor Dave Monaco, the baritones William Hernandez and Francesco Samuele Venuti, the basses Michele Gianquinto and Shuxin Li. Accompanying on the piano are fellow academicians Claudio Capretti and Claudio Marchetti .

The artists will perform a rich program of arias and duets by Georges Bizet, Arrigo Boito, Gaetano Donizetti, Georg Friedrich Händel, Rosendo Mato Hermida, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giacomo Puccini, Gioachino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi from the operas La jolie fille de Perth (Bizet), Mefistofele (Boito), L’elisir d’amore and Roberto Devereux (Donizetti), Giulio Cesare (Handel), Lela (Hermida), Le nozze di Figaro (Mozart), Gianni Schicchi (Puccini), L’italiana in Algieri (Rossini), I masnadieri, Flastaff, and Un ballo in maschera (Verdi). Each student has chosen works to perform according to their sensitivity, taste and predisposition revealing to the public their refined interpretative qualities and skills, developed during the two-year courses. They have perfected their art by frequently appearing on the stage during the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino’s symphonic and opera season.

The free tickets are being distributed at the Maggio ticket office (piazzale Vittorio Gui, 1), which is closed on Monday. On the day of the event, Tuesday, July 14, the ticket office, in addition to the usual morning hours, will reopen in the afternoon at 3 pm with continuous hours until 9 pm at the beginning of the concert.  (anne lokken)
