December 5: MOZART ANNIVERSARY CONCERT. Basilica of Santa Croce, Piazza Santa Croce. Free admission subject to availability. 9 pm.

In light of the anniversary of Mozart’s death (December 5, 1791), the Basilica of Santa Croce will host the Fiorence Chamber Orchestra and the Harmonia Cantata Choir to pay homage to the great composer with a free concert. The musicians will be conducted by Raffaele Puccianti, including soloists Patrizia Cigna (soprano), Patrizio Scivoletto (contralto), the Russian tenor Vladimir Reutov and Diego Colli (bass).

The orchestra will play Mozart’s “Requiem Mass” which is an unfinished work that was completed by Mozart’s friend Franz Xaver Süssmayr. Many claim that when Mozart was composing the piece in late 1791, he was somehow aware that he was working on the music for his own funeral. “Requiem Mass” represents man’s confrontation with death, heaven, and God.

The orchestra will go on to play Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus” which is one of Mozart’s most famous compositions that was also finished months before his untimely death.

Theatergoers will also be able to see the orchestra musicians utilizing historical instruments during the performance. (Michela Tambasco)
