James Conlon conducts the Orchestra della Toscana

CLASSICAL MUSIC CONCERT:  ORCHESTRA DELLA TOSCANA conducted by James Conlon. Music of Schubert and Beethoven.  Teatro Verdi, via Ghibellina 99. 9 pm.

James Conlon is conducting the Orchestra della Toscana (ORT) in a rendition of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 4, “Tragic,” for the inaugural concert at the Orchestra of Tuscany.

James Conlon is a titan in the world of classical music. An American conductor with Italian roots, Conlon is renowned for avoiding the spotlight and focusing on enhancing his programs to the best of his ability while staying true to their cultural relevance. He currently heads the Rotterdam Philharmonic is the music director of the Los Angeles Opera and a guest conductor at the Metropolitan of New York, where he has led more than three hundred performances.

The evening features two early 19th century compositions that were composed in Vienna. First will be Schubert’s Symphony No. 4, also known as “Tragic,” followed by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. Both are majestic pieces with a deep, complex history behind them. Schubert began this piece when he was nineteen. The dark, somber tone was inspired by his unhappy childhood, and the composition displays influence from Haydn and Mozart. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 features a thunderous, ominous beginning inspired by the politically turbulent era the composer lived through.
