Weekend Trio Chamber Concerts at Teatro della Pergola & Teatro Niccolini

The musicians of the Trio Gaspard

This weekend’s concerts organized by the Amici della Musica will feature music composed specifically for trios at Teatro delle Pergola on Saturday, April 13 at 4 pm and at the Teatro Niccolini on Sunday, April 14 at 9 pm.

Marco Rizzo (violin), Alessio Allegrini (French horn) and Benedetto Lupo (piano) take the stage on Saturday.  They will perform pieces by Ligeti and Bartók in addition to the Horn Trio op. 40 by the Romantic composer Brahms (1833 – 1897), a pioneering work that was innovative for its time.  Ligeti (1923 – 2006) was a 20th century Hungarian avant-garde composer whose works carry on tradition of his fellow composer and countryman Béla Bartók (1881 – 1945), who incorporated influences of folk melodies and rhythms in his work.  Lupo will solo in a rendition of Brahms’ Three Intermezzi, Op. 117.

Marco Rizzo, a recipient of the Tchaikovsky and Queen Elizabeth awards, was invited as a guest artist to La Scala, Lincoln Center and other prestigious venues.  As a principal French horn player, Alessio Allegrin has collaborated with world’s most important conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Carlo Maria Giulini, Daniel Barenboim, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Lorin Maazel, Myung-Whun Chung, Mariss Jansons, Jeffrey Tate, Valery Gergiev, Sir Simon Rattle, Antonio Pappano and Riccardo Muti.  Benedetto Lupo came into the spotlight at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1989, and has since headlined with the leading orchestras of the world.

Sunday’s program, comprising compositions by Winkelman, Haydn, Veress, Brahms, Schumann, will be brought on stage at the Niccolini by the Trio Gaspard.  The ensemble is made up of musicians from Germany, Greece and the U.K., known for their fresh and dynamic sound.
